Sgt. Jake Elkins, a cannon crewmember assigned to 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, speaks on being diagnosed with Pectus Excavatum and why it’s important to have hobbies at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Aug. 21, 2023. Pectus Excavatum is a condition causing the sternum to compress on the heart and lungs, resulting in shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue. At the age of 16, Elkins would undergo Pectus Excavatum surgery. The surgery was successful and two years later Elkins enlisted in the U.S. Army. Elkins says his number one stress relief is to run and believes running is the best thing he’s done for his physical and mental health. (U.S. Army video by Spc.
