LTG Smith is happily married to the former Lynn Gaston of Atlanta, GA. They are the proud parents of three grown children, Ashlyn Olivia, Meghan Kate, and Stephen Gregory, Jr.
He received his commission through the ROTC program at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1991. He holds an MBA from Mississippi State University and graduated the U.S. Army War College through the Army’s Fellowship Program at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies in Washington, DC.

LTG Smith’s commands include the 7th Infantry Division (I Corps),18th Field Artillery Brigade (82nd Airborne Division), 2nd BN, 377th Parachute Field Artillery Regiment (4-25 BCT-USARAK), and Bravo Battery, 25th Field Artillery (1st Infantry Division).

Previous General Officer assignments and positions include DCG of America’s First Corps; Commandant of the U.S. Army Field Artillery School; DCG(S) for the 1st Infantry Division; Director of Operations for Iraq and Syria - CJTF-OIR; and Chief of Staff of the XVIII Airborne Corps. Most recently, he served as the Special Assistant to the CG of USARPAC.

Deployments include Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Inherent Resolve, Operation Joint Guard, and Operation All American Assist. He has served OCONUS in South Korea, Germany, and Alaska.
