FORSCOM HMMWV Egress Assistance Trainer (HEAT)

(also known as the Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer)

Freddie

HEAT Program Objective

Teach Soldiers the proper procedures to egress from an inverted HMMWV. Conducting this training under controlled conditions will allow vehicle occupants to gain experience in the proper egress procedures. This practice is necessary for the Soldiers to achieve self-control and overcome natural fear and panic following the catastrophic event which led to the vehicle becoming inverted. A study reported by Helicopter World (now Defense Helicopter) Magazine in September of 2000 said that a person who is "Egress Trained" stands a 250 percent greater chance of survival than an untrained occupant when faced with a water egress emergency. This HMMWV Egress Assistance Trainer will lead the Soldier to develop high confidence in his or her ability to respond automatically to this inverted emergency whether they are under water, under fire, or on fire.

The Prototype HEAT Simulator

The first HEAT was developed by FORSCOM with the help of ECS 43, Ft. Gillem, GA.
