Maj. Gen. Thoele became the Deputy Commanding General, Army National Guard, on 21 September 2012. In this position, he sustains direct communication with the Director of the Army National Guard, U.S. Army Forces Command staff and First Army senior leadership and provides candid advice, feedback, and recommendations to the FORSCOM Commanding General on all Army National Guard issues. Additionally, he maintains active liaison with the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Manpower & Reserve Affairs; Adjutants General; National Guard Bureau; major Army National Guard commands; Army Reserve Forces Policy Committee and the Reserve Component Coordination Council to facilitate operationalizing the Reserve Component and other key issues.
He received his commission in the U.S. Army from the Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Ga. in December 1980.
Maj. Gen. Thoele’s assignments include 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division; 12th Special Forces Group; 65th Troop Command Brigade; 20th Special Forces Group; State Area Command, Illinois; 178th Infantry Regiment; 66th Infantry Brigade; Joint Forces Headquarters, Illinois; Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix, Kabul, Afghanistan; and the Army Operations Center, Pentagon.
He has served as an Infantry and Special Forces Officer throughout his career. He has participated in Operation Urgent Fury, Desert Storm Southwest Asia Cease Fire Campaign, Hurricane Mitch Relief Operations, Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His most recent combat assignment was Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix, Kabul, Afghanistan, from 2008 – 2009. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the Deputy Commanding General, Army National Guard at the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
Maj. Gen. Thoele’s military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, The U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army War College, the National Defense University, and the Army Strategic Leadership Development Program. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Quincy University and a Master’s of Science in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. His decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Combat Infantryman Badge with star, Expert Infantry Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Special Forces Tab.
